Today is the day for Oscar nominations. After the recent Golden Globe Awards, we can start to get an idea of who will be the contenders in every category. But with the addition of some actors or films in each category, our idea is never quite clear of who will win on February 28th. Here are a few of my opinions about the few “major” categories of the evening.
BEST PICTURE
- The Big Short
- Bridge of Spies
- Brooklyn
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Martian
- The Revenant
- Room
- Spotlight
The Oscar will go to The Revenant. Although there are many good films in this category, none of them are great films. I truly loved Mad Max: Fury Road, and I respect that the film was nominated, but it won’t win. Also, I’m surprised that Carol didn’t get a nomination, but Bridge of Spies did.
BEST ACTOR
- Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
- Matt Damon, The Martian
- Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
- Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
- Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl
I will continue to believe that this year will finally be Leo’s year. Matt Damon is definitely a contender, but in reality, not even Damon can stop Leo’s train to gold.
BEST ACTRESS
- Cate Blanchett, Carol
- Brie Larson, Room
- Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
- Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
- Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
I’m hoping the winner will be Brie Larson, but I have a feeling she’s going to be robbed by Cate Blanchett. I don’t have a concrete winner for this category yet.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
- Christian Bale, The Big Short
- Tom Hardy, The Revenant
- Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
- Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
- Sylvester Stallone, Creed
I am so happy that Tom Hardy got a nomination for The Revenant. He deserves it. Although, I believe it’s going to come down to Stallone and Rylance for the gold.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
- Rooney Mara, Carol
- Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
- Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
- Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
I hope that Winslet can continue her winning streak with a win for Best Supporting Actress. However, at the Golden Globes, both Mara and Blanchett were nominated for Best Actress. Therefore, maybe splitting the vote. Mara might have a better chance in this category when she isn’t competing against her costar.
DIRECTING
- Adam McKay – The Big Short
- George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
- Alejandro G. Iñárritu – The Revenant
- Lenny Abrahamson – Room
- Tom McCarthy – Spotlight
Alejandro will win. No question. Although it is a surprise that there is no nomination for Ridley Scott. Still no Oscar for Ridley.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
- The Big Short
- Brooklyn
- Carol
- The Martian
- Room
This category is between The Martian, Carol, and Room. These three films each have as much chance as the other. However, no nomination for Aaron Sorkin? Considering his win at the Golden Globes, I thought he would be a sure thing.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
- Bridge of Spies
- Ex Machina
- Inside Out
- Spotlight
- Straight Outta Compton
Nice. Straight Outta Compton is receiving love! I think the Spielberg fan girls will push Bridge of Spies to win in this category. I would love Inside Out or Ex Machina to win, but those two films have a small chance. Also, no nomination for Tarantino in this category? His script was genius.
That is my reaction to the “major” Oscar categories. What did you think? Who was robbed? Who was nominated who really shouldn’t be there? Let me know in the comments!
